Why Building AI-Agility Will Soon Become the Top Priority of Technology Leaders

by James Briggs – CEO and Co-founder AI Collaborator

Among other things, 2021 proved to be an excellent year for providers of artificial intelligence (AI) solutions and services as companies sought to address the gaps left exposed by the Covid-19 pandemic. Researcher IDC estimated that worldwide AI spending grew to nearly $350 billion as the pandemic accelerated the adoption of machine learning and other AI technologies. Additionally, a recent study by PWC confirmed that fifty-two percent of large companies accelerated their AI adoption plans because of the pandemic. And yet, even with such significant investments, all is far from perfect in enterprise AI.  AI project failure rates remain troublingly high: Tech Republic estimates that eighty-five percent of AI projects eventually fail to deliver their intended results. And most businesses still struggle to acquire the critical talent and other technical resources needed to facilitate their AI transformations. To overcome these struggles, technology leaders such as CIOs and CDOs must move beyond their early adopter mindsets and reframe their technical resource investment strategies to build organizational AI agility.

What exactly is AI agility? Very simply, as an organization’s adaptability to meet internal AI capacity demands of business priorities. At the most basic level, harnessing the power of AI comes down to an organization’s ability to access and effectively deploy the AI technologies, talent, and data resources required to take projects from inception through implementation. In today’s business environment, intense competition is being waged for these resources internally and externally as more businesses seek to become more flexible, adaptable, and innovative in the face of uncertainty and adversity. As such, AI technologies and talents are considered mission-critical resources for business continuity and digital transformation efforts. By reframing the AI resource conversation in terms of an organization’s AI agility, leaders will be able to more easily quantify an often very complex business challenge into a much easier-to-understand business metric.

As AI becomes established in many industries, demand for AI talent is increasing exponentially. At the same time, technology leaders of most large organizations can neither hire their way out of their AI-resources challenges to build internal capacity nor upskill enough employees to close the sizable gaps fully. Instead, technology leaders must think more strategically and seek differentiated solutions that increase their AI agility, focusing on long-term organizational needs. Acknowledging that AI is different, and demands a more versatile approach, is an essential first step. After all, AI is a vast field.  There isn’t a single area of expertise that will fully guarantee business success since AI expertise spans many business functions.

If the pandemic taught technology leaders anything, the ability to adapt quickly and decisively is paramount when addressing critical resource matters during periods of uncertainty. Indeed, it can mean the difference between thriving and struggling to survive.

AI Collaborator works with technology and procurement leaders across large sectors, such as education, pharmaceuticals, automotive, retail, consumer goods, and others, helping them improve their organization’s AI agility through collaborations. If your organization is ready to consider a new and differentiated approach to competing in today’s complex business climate, we look forward to working with you.

Can Conversational AI Help Nursing Students Be More Successful? A Case Study

Overview: Thomas Jefferson University’s College of Nursing (JCN) decided to test conversational AI technologies to augment its instructional support systems to deliver better outcomes for its nursing students.

The Use Case: Nursing students face many challenges pursuing their degrees and certification. The pressures of a nursing curriculum can lead to high stress and anxiety levels and, if unaddressed, can negatively impact program completion rates. In an ideal world, all students would have access to the resources they need to perform at high levels and achieve successful outcomes. But in most cases, providing individualized attention is cost-prohibitive. So JCN sought to deploy and test an intelligent conversational AI solution via a chatbot to augment its faculty and staff instructional support systems.

How AI Collaborator Helped: JCN recognized a need for an experienced outside partner that could help it to define its requirements, then identify, vet, and evaluate potential conversational AI solution providers for a pilot program. AI Collaborator was selected to work with JCN’s team to define and align the priorities of the primary JCN stakeholders via a managed articulation process and then oversee a comprehensive pilot program focused on student success. Once the articulation process was complete and all technical requirements identified, AI Collaborator then helped JCN vet conversational AI providers best equipped to support a student success use case to advance JCN’s mission. Finally, AI Collaborator and JCN implemented a comprehensive pilot program to test the chosen conversational AI partner.

The Outcomes: In November 2021, JCN introduced TJae, a student success chatbot, to a pilot group of nursing students. After a successful three-month pilot program, whereby student engagement rates reach as high as 85%, JCN now intends to expand access to TJae for all of Jefferson’s full-time nursing students.

A Spotlight on Our Partners

image

AI Collaborator recently sat with our friends at Mainstay and asked a few questions about who they are and the new and exciting breakthroughs in Conversational AI and Natural Language Processing.

Who is Mainstay and what differentiates the company in the market?
Mainstay helps colleges and universities connect with students at scale using empathetic, conversational chatbots that deepen engagement and drive student success.

What problems does Mainstay help organizations solve, and what is AI’s role in the solution?
Mainstay’s AI-powered chatbots are built using our Behavioral Intelligence framework, which combines intelligence (IQ), empathy (EQ), and contextual relevance (CQ). By considering the whole person, our Behavioral Intelligence approach opens the door to millions of meaningful connections.

How does Mainstay use NLP to communicate with people without the need for human interaction?
We use NLP and deep neural networks to translate student messages into meaning. We do this by successfully matching student messages to embeddings that represent the student’s intent. This ensures immediate, accurate responses to students at a pace and scale far beyond human capacity.

What is your AI team’s background?
Our ML engineers have experience building and deploying embedded neural network models, determining effectiveness of models, and identifying their strengths and weaknesses. Members of the team have previously worked on consumer applications such as Amazon’s Alexa and Spotify’s Voice Assistant. They also bring a deep understanding of other types of machine learning and non-machine, rule-based methods.

What are some innovations/market trends you see happening with NLP and conversational AI in 2022?
There’s much more we can do to explore and advance deep learning. We anticipate major improvements with Multilingual NLU as well as advancements in emotion and sentiment analysis. We also expect breakthroughs that will make AI technology more empathetic — and more human.
